Old railroad in Laos to reconstruct by 2007!


(KPL) An old railway was constructed in1917 by France in Champassak province the most southern part of country will be rebuilt next year, said a governmental senior official.

After the Lao government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a foreign company of the Republic of Korea last month.

Deputy Director of the Lao National Railway Authority Sonesack N Nhansana told KPL news reporter Tuesday that “the foreign investor would invest around US$6 million in the Improvement and Reconstruction of Old Railway Project in Champassak province”... more

The railway stretches 6.5 km from Ban Khonetai to Ban Deth (Khonephapheng biggest waterfall), Khong district in the most southern of Champassak province.
The construction is under mutual cooperation between the Lao government and Korean investor and it would be launched in 2007.

The project is aiming at promoting tourism the most southern province and strengthening the national economic growth in the future.

The engine of train has been preserved by local authorities and people of Ban Khonetai, it is also an attractive tourism site for foreigners during Ban Khonetai to Khnonepapheng waterfall.

In the past, this railroad was used for goods transport from Laos to Cambodia.
