National University of Laos launches first Master programme on Environmental-Engineering Management

(KPL) The Faculty of Engineering of the National University of Laos (NUOL) yesterday launched its first Environmental Engineering and Management Master's Programme.

“This two- year intensive program is funded by the EuropeAid Asia-Link Programme, which was set up by the European Commission to promote regional and multilateral networks between higher education institutions in the European Union states and partner states in Asia,” said yesterday the Dean of the faculty Mr Boualin Soysouvanh... more info>>

The Faculty of Engineering in cooperation with the German University of Siegen has created this degree with their partners the Technical University of Krakow in Poland and Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology at Tamasat University in Thailand in order to meet the growing demands for high quality degrees in higher education of Laos. Mr Boualin was quoted as saying.

“One of the objectives of the Asia-Link partnership is to improve the engineering education offered at the National University of Laos and their research capacity in Environmental Engineering and Management,” he said.

The Faculty of Engineering has some 240 teaching staff and 5,000 students its departments. The qualification of the teaching staff on average is relatively low: 5% have a Doctorate degree, of which mainly originate from Vietnam, USA and Germany. Meanwhile, 25% have a master's degree, 40% bachelor's degree.

“This is the main reason the Faculty of Engineering cannot offer master degree programmes to the students,” continued Mr Boualin. “Moreover, only a bachelor can be offered at the Faculty of Engineering.”

The Asia-Link Project expects to increase the capacity of the Faculty especially in the topics of water resource management, renewable energies, and biomass technology, which will be taught in the Master's Programme to meet the environmental challenges Laos PDR faces.

In addition, the Asia-Link Project is seeking International Accreditation, therefore one of the requirements for the Master's Programme was an International English Language Standard Test score of 5.0.

The National University said that more than 60 applicants, 22 students have been admitted into this programme and up to three students will immediately start their Doctorate degrees under the Asia-Link Programme.
