Ranking of International Corruption: Laos at the bottom list !

(KPL) The 2006 Transparency International Corruption Perception Index ranks Laos 111 out of 163 countries, according to the opening remarks by Setsuko Yamazaki UNDP Resident Representative to Laos.

Mrs Setsuko said, “corruption was an age-old problem-all nations around the world, to varying degrees, experience it in some form and suffer accordingly. The World Bank recently estimated the cost of worldwide corruption at a staggering US$1.5trillion-or 5 percent of global GDP each year”.

The consequence of corruption is affected badly to the nation construction, to combat corruption, the UN General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) in 2003. Lao PDR was among the first countries to sign the convention. UNCAC came into force on 14 December, 200, after it was ratified by 30 countries. Earlier in the same year, Lao PDR had also adopted national anti-corruption legislation.

Early this year, The President Choummaly Sayasone said that the problem of corruption has grown over the years and needs urgently to be addressed. This point was reiterated at the recently concluded Ninth Round Table Meeting on 29 November and the Government of Laos took a strong stance by sign the “Vientiane Declaration on Aid Effectiveness” with 22 development partners, which called on Lao Government to “take leadership in the financial management improvement process.” All these concrete action clearly represent a political willingness to tackle corruption problems.

Deputy Prime Minister Asang also called on civil servants, officers, mass media, businesspersons and all citizens gather together to monitor the corruption to help government in the prevention and anti-corruption, aiming at preserving state property, society and Lao citizens.

The celebration, as the Lao Government in collaboration with UNDP celebrated the 3rd anniversary of International Day Against Corruption.
