Poupe, famous TV presenter from Laos
College, TV and music videos: all in a day's work
Coping with a busy lifestyle is never easy, especially if you're only 21 and studying at two different colleges while juggling a TV career at the same time
But this is not a problem for Ms Malysa Phetrany, nicknamed Poupe, who is in her final year of studies at both Lao-American College (LAC) and Rattana Business Administration College (RBAC).
In an interview with Vientiane Times this week, Poupe said she now has a part time job as a presenter on a TV programme produced by RBAC, Rattana Seuksa, which is on air every weekend.
She manages her time by working in the morning and studying at RBAC in the afternoon before heading to LAC for more study in the evening.
You may well wonder how she finds the time to study and how she has managed to achieve the outstanding grade point average of 3.7 at LAC.
Poupe doesn't hesitate; she answers with a smile that she has a slogan which inspires her on the road to academic and career success: “Be patient, ambitious and self-confident, and concentrate on your studies and work – this way you will reach your goal in the end.”
She also has a hero and role model in her father - a patient, focused and hard-working man. Sadly, he died several years ago.
These are the sources of inspiration that have guided her to success at the age of 21.
“Studying and reading a lot will help us to improve ourselves. We should make notes to remember what we learn,” Poupe says.
She has plenty of ideas about what she might do in the future. She says she would like to run her own tourist resort after she graduates. On top of this, she would like to run a handicraft business because she has a passion for Lao silk.
Another ambition is to work for an NGO or INGO in an administrative or accounting position which would put her qualifications to good use.
She also uses what she has learnt in college, especially her knowledge of international accounting from RBAC, to help with her parents' hotel and tourism business.
Because she is a TV presenter and has been master of ceremonies at numerous events, most people don't realise that Poupe is actually a shy young lady who does her best to hide it.
Even after becoming a TV presenter, Poupe never dreamed that she would be successful at it, but now she presents several programmes on the Lao Star channel including Lao Star Music TV, Nhaovaxon Khonkeng, and En-Zone.
Several months after becoming a presenter on Lao Star, Poupe was invited to appear in a music video for the Lao band Secret. She also starred in the video for Moukky's “Oh Soud Thi Hak” which can still be seen on TV at the moment.
Magazine exposure followed; last year Poupe appeared in Khuanchai and was on the front cover of Mahason.
In a health and beauty contest organised by Nestle at the That Luang Festival last year, she was one of 10 finalists out of over 200 contestants from around the country.
Speaking about her TV presenting work, she says she strongly believes it can really help her in her studies, especially in giving presentations as part of college assignments. It has also taught her to communicate effectively with people at every level.
Poupe says she loves reading and enjoys searching for information on the Internet in her free time. She has a strong social conscience and likes getting involved with her friends in activities that benefit society.
All this adds up to making Poupe an exceptional young lady.
She believes that anyone can be successful if they work hard, focus and try to improve themselves all the time.
“When you discover for yourself what you want to do, you shouldn't hesitate. You've got to go for it.”
