Vientiane runs short of cement

(KPL) Vientiane Capital has run short of cement in two consecutive weeks as market demand is increased by 30 per cent over last year.

Last week, the Cement Producers Group said this year is the first year the market experienced cement shortage earlier than any year before and if the demand remained high over the next two to three months, the price will be very much increased.

The group has proposed the government to give a green light to the import of cement from neighbouring countries to ease and stabilise cement prices in the market.

�This year, cement sells like a hot cake,� said Market Manager of the Industrial and Agriculture Development and Import-Export Service Enterprise Mr. Inpone Phatthananoulack.

The largest cement producer, Lao Cement Factory, can produce only 1.8 million tonnes of cement annually while the annum demand is 3 million tonnes and sees an increasing trend. Vientiane Capital, the main market of cement, has sold out all cement stored in it reserve, which amounts to 10 per cent of cement market in the country, unlike in the preceding years.

The current price of green Kathing-branded cement is 720,000 kip per tonne and that of the red one is 780,000 kip per tonne.

It is expected that such a price would increase to 900,000 kip per tonne in two or three months as March and April are the high season for cement consumption.
