Laos edge Thailand to finish third in AFF U-16

VIENTIANE (8 June 2012) – Laos beat nine-man Thailand 3-0 to finish third in the AFF Under-16 Preparatory Tournament 2012 here at the Lao National Stadium.

In the match that was always going to be volatile, the Thais put up a much better display when compared to their first meeting earlier when the two sides battled to a 1-o win for the hosts.

But with the rain coming down for the first time in the tournament this year, the pace of the game will be pegged down somewhat even though Laos did welcome the return of striker Armysay Kettavong.

At the start, both teams were cautious and were not willing to commit too much although Laos did come close in the fifth minute through who else but Armysay only for him to muff his chance altogether.

Thailand responded in the 14^th minute with a superb freekick from Kunawut Maperm but he narrowly missed his intended target.

With the score tied at the break, the second half saw both teams growing in frustration, more so for the home side as in spite of the rain, several thousand still turn up at the stands to support the youngsters.

In the 54^th minute, a dipping shot from Anoukone Keola off a freekick saw Thai custodian Apirak Worawong scrambling for the save.

But a clash in the 63^rd minute which saw Thai midfielder Kittikai Juntaraksa picking up his second red card in two matches would change the temperament and ultimately the outcome of the tie.

In the 75^th minute, as Laos piled on the pressure on the Thai backline, a cross from Jo Sandala was out into the back of the net by Thai defender Jutitep Tonglim. And several exchanges to be followed by some late tackles later, saw Thailand defender Supravee Miprathang picking up his second yellow card of the game.

Referee Steve Supresencia of the Philippines showed Supravee the marching orders as Thailand were forced to play the remainder of the match with nine men. With the numerical advantage that they had and as Thailand tire down in the closing stages, Laos then proceeded to add two more goals through Southavone Thammada and Jo Sandala.

Oudomsay Stadium completion expected to be in 2013

(KPL) Builder of the Oudomsay provincial stadium has said the construction of the provincial main stadium to be used for hosting the national games in 2014 has been achieved by over 51% but it is expected see a completion in 2013.

Mr. Bounkone Viengvisay, Deputy Chairman of the Ely Survey, Design, Consultancy and Construction Company said that the construction of the stadium has been completed by 69.83%, that of indoor stadiums has been completed by 55%, of swimming pool by 58.64%, and the construction of facilities surrounding the main stadium has been achieved by 70.24%.

�Although the construction of the stadium has progressed beyond the expectation the contractor is now lacking construction materials particularly, sand and increasing price of construction materials,� said Mr. Bounkone.

Vietnamese businessman invests in Lao football

VietNamNet Bridge – Vietnam’s Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) Group will join the Lao government to organize the Laos League.

The project to hold Laos League – the national professional football championship – is being designed by the Lao Football Federation. The Vietnamese group will contribute capital to this project and participate in the league with a HAGL-funded FC in Laos.

HAGL’s Chair Doan Nguyen Duc, who owns the HAGL FC in Vietnam, said Laos does not have a national football championship while the local government and people want to have such an event.

He said HAGL will not only contribute capital but its 10-year experience with football business to implement the Laos League project.

Duc said this project is at the beginning step so HAGL’s investment is not fixed yet but the figure would be in millions of US dollars.

In Vietnam, Duc invests nearly VND100 billion ($5 million) in the HAGL FC a year.

Recently, HAGL has stated to spend around $1 billion in forest and rubber growing, airport, sugar, hospital and school projects in Laos’ poorest province of Attapeu.

Laos looking forward to U-16s

Kuala Lumpur: Laos' preparation for the AFC U-16 Championship 2012 has already started in earnest and the current U-16 team is the best so far that will give strong nations a run for their money, Lao Football Federation General Secretary Xaybandith Rasphone said.

Laos finished as the third best-placed team in Group F of the championship's qualification and joined group winners Japan and runners-up Korea Republic at the tournament proper, which will be held from September 20 to October 6 in Iran next year.

Rasphone, who attended the two-day AFC General Secretary Induction Programme at AFC House, told the-afc.com:

"We have gained a place in the AFC U-16 Championship 2012 so we are preparing ourselves to make sure we will be playing better in the matches to come.

"We have also signed up a coach from DPR Korea to manage the under 16 team which boasts youngster who are also playing in the Lao League.

"Also, we have planned friendly matches against Thailand and Australia hopefully next year and we also want to set up another friendly with a Middle East nation which would be a great out-of-the-region experience for our young players."

"This under 16 team is the best that we have managed to assemble so far and we believe we have what it takes to give good competition to some of the best nations in the youth championship."

LAOS NEED TO MAINTAIN FOCUS THROUGHOUT

JAKARTA (13 Oct 2011) – The campaign has not turned out the way Laos had anticipated where after three matches in Group B, the 2009 semi-finalists have only picked up just one point.

They began their campaign with an uncharacteristic 3-2 loss to ten-man Myanmar while in the second game, they were really lucky to escape with a 2-2 draw when they scored the all-important equaliser right at the death.

And in their last game, they allowed the Philippines to steal to a 3-2 win with two late goals from Mark Hartmann.

“It is my duty as the chief coach of Laos to accept responsibility for the losses the team suffered. Afterall, I’m the one who chose the starting eleven,” lamented Hans Schaller.

“In Europe, there is a famous saying which goes something like, if the team wins; it is the players who were responsible. But if the team loses, then is the coach who is responsible.”

What made the insipid performance of the Laos players a little hard to stomach is that in all three matches, they had played against ten men.

While admitting that it is sometimes harder to play against teams with ten men, Schaller admitted that the problem perhaps lie on the Laos players themselves.

“”I don’t know why, but at times, my players looked a bit confused. That’s why we let in the goals. We played well and had ball possession and chances, it was just the result that was disappointing,” he added.

“I don’t know how many chances we had. But that’s football, if you don’t score you draw or lose. It was just a matter of concentration and the boys are just not focused enough.”

Laos will play their fourth game in the group against Timor Leste later today before rounding things up with their last game against Vietnam on 17 November.

Laos U-23 stuns by 10-man Brunei in 26th SEA Games

Laos seem to find it difficult to play against teams with ten men and tonight, they were lucky not to concede a second loss in the competition when they held Brunei to a 2-2 draw at the Lebak Bulus Stadium.

On the first match day of Group B the Laotians, the 2009 semi-finalists failed to take advantage of Myanmar playing with ten men, when they succumbed to a 3-2 defeat.

And tonight, Brunei’s hopes of picking up their first win was stuttered as early as the 15^thminute when defender Reduan Petara was red carded by Indonesian referee Oki Putra for a foul on Laos captain Lamnao Singto.

And while Laos’ Ketsada might have missed the upright with the ensuing freekick, there was no stopping them from clinching the lead when Lamnao after cutting in from the left, unleashed a well-placed shot in the 18^th minute for the lead.

Laos then stepped up the pressure in search of the second goal but it was to be Brunei who found the back of the net when striker Adi Said, found the time and space for the equalizer.

The score at the end of the first half was 1-1.

It was Brunei who started brighter after the restart and in the 56^th minute, they put their noses in front for the first time in the game – with Adi again on top of his game to punish some hesitant Laos defence.

Certainly, Brunei were not expecting such a score line when they were playing with ten men but not too long afterwards, the change for the nippy Manolom would change the pace and also the outcome of the game.

Ten minutes to the end, Manolom poked in a mad scramble inside the Brunei box when keeper Awangku Omar Sallehudin came off his line.

JAKARTA (3 Nov 2011) – Defender Win Aung Kyaw certainly did not expect such a finish. But in the end, all the hard work and discipline paid off on the night when his strike at the tail end of the second half gave ten man Myanmar a well-deserved 3-2 win over Laos in the second match of Group B of the men’s football event at the Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno.

With the evening sky opening up just ten minutes into the tie, the game was always going to be long and testing for both Myanmar and Laos.

And for Myanmar, they could not have started their campaign on a worst note than when in the 15^th minute, Lwin Nya Ma was red carded for foul a foul on Laos captain Lamnao Singto for impeding what would have been a goal scoring opportunity.

But despite being a man down, it was Myanmar who grabbed the lead when in the 19^th minute, Kyaw Ko Ko’s headed in the corner from Pyaw Phyo.

Myanmar stepped up their tempo with several attempts from Minh Minh Thu, Aye San and Ko Ko but all failed to change the score line as it stayed 1-0 until the end of the first half.

Laos then brought in Phattana for Soukhaphone and that improved their ball possession as they were less eager to launch into the attack.

And while Sangvone’s grounder in the 56^th minute might have astray, there was no stopping Laos from grabbing the lead in the 65^th minute when Lamnao made good with a header from Soukhaphone’s free kick.

But five minutes, later, Myanmar fought back to steal the lead for the second time on the night, when the nippy Ko Ko ran in from the right for a cross which saw Minh Minh Tu having the easiest of tap in.

That goal sparked another surge from Laos in the 74^th minute where off a cross from Manolom from the left, Sangvone beat two defenders before slotting the ball home to put the score 2-2.

However, Myanmar showed that while they may be a man down, they are still a spirited lot when in the 78^th minute, defender Win Aung Kyaw scores from a tight angle off a beautiful lob from Kyi Lin’s lob.

Late leveller denies Laos

Ho Chi Minh City: Laos were denied a winning start to their 2012 AFC U-19 Championship qualifying campaign as Myanmar scored three minutes in to stoppage-time to salvage a 2-2 draw on Monday.

Phoutthasay Khochalern put Laos one up with just ten minutes gone before Sitthideth Khanthavong added to the defender's first-half opener with the second seven minutes after the interval.

Laos were in a strong position but in the 78^th minute substitute Ye Ko Oo reduced the deficit before the midfielder, a 59^th minute replacement for defender Wai Phyo Lwin, struck deep into time added on to earn Myanmar a share of the spoils.

Meanwhile, hosts Vietnam were frustrated by ten-man Malaysia in the qualifying Group F curtain raiser earlier on Monday.

Vietnam were given the numerical advantage in the 56^th minute when midfielder Muhammad Nazmi Faiz bin Mansor was dismissed after receiving his second caution of the game following his first booking two minutes before the interval.

However, despite playing for more than half-an-hour with a man less, Malaysia successfully shutout the hosts to earn a share of the spoils.

SEA GAMES 2011: Laos is in Group B

JAKARTA (19 Oct 2011) – Laos is placed in group B together with Vietnam, Brunei, Philippines, Myanmar and Timor Leste.

Hosts Indonesia and defending champions Malaysia have been placed in the tougher Group A of the SEA Games 2011 which will be held in Jakarta starting on 3 November 2011.

The other teams in Group A are Thailand, Singapore and Cambodia.

The draw for the men’s football event at the 26^th edition of the SEA Games was held at the RCTI Studio in West Jakarta.

AFF WOMEN’S C’SHIP: RENEWED SENSE OF EXCITEMENT

VIENTIANE (14 Oct 2011) – After a year’s hiatus, the return of the AFF Women’s Championship has brought a renewed sense of excitement – no doubt an after effect of Japan’s win of the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup.

With eight teams taking part – including of course the big three of Thailand, Vietnam and Myanmar – the expectation is that the other five teams will put up more than just token resistance.

Thailand had pipped Vietnam for a place in the final qualifying round of the 2012 Olympic qualifiers while Myanmar, they had always shown they can be very competitive at this level.

From the indication and the early ‘intel’, the other five teams are well prepared.

Laos by virtue of being the hosts have been preparing the team for several months where they will be aiming for a place in the final to show that they are worthy of being part of the quartet of ASEAN powerhouse in the women’s game.

For the Philippines, they have opted to bring in several foreign-based players to fortify their team and improve on their performance from two years ago in Myanmar when they lost all three of their matches and scoring only once as against conceding 30 goals.

Indonesia have decided to use the same side which represented the country two years ago – a team from the region of Papua – while for Malaysia and Singapore, they are basically at the same level.

Both will be using this AFF Women’s Championship to gauge the level of their respective teams before looking to tweak and improve for the next tournament.

For sure, the women’s game in ASEAN is still lagging a little behind but it is important that through competition like this, member associations use the opportunity to improve the competitive edge of their teams.

As afterall, if Japan can be world champions, then definitely, it is an inspiration that as Asians we can also scale the greater heights.

Laos football team fails to win in BIDC Cup

Cambodia opened their campaign in the BIDC Cup with a 2-0 win over ASEAN neighbour Laos in the match that was played at the National Olympic Stadium.

In front of more than 30,000 fans, the home team nailed the opener in the 22^nd minute off Phourng Soksana before adding their second goal of the game from veteran Khuon Laboravy five minutes to the end.

For the second game, Laos lost to Myanmar 0 to 4.
